Description
In Bordeaux, there are two Jewish communities: one from Portugal and the other from the venaissin Comtat. Due to the lack of space in the Jewish cemetery of the Impasse Saint-Jean, two new land was bought in 1764. One of these land was intended for the Jews of Avignon, located near the current rue Sauteyron, while the other was reserved for Portuguese Jews, near the road to Spain. This last site brought together the graves of the members of the two communities after the Avignon cemetery has become saturated. There are several burials of famous Bordeaux personalities. The land has an L -shaped shape, and the oldest part dates back to the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. In the south, the extension of the cemetery dates from the 19th and 20th centuries. In the center, an oratory was erected in 1843 for funeral ceremonies. This building has a rectangular gable, with a door flanked by two pilasters with ionic capitals, surmounted by a triangular pediment.
